What Accreditation Do I Need?

All referees in NSW must be SmartRugby qualified. This is the minimum requirement to referee as mandated by the ARU and NSWRU. Beyond this, to answer the question of what accreditation you need, we need to find out why you want to referee ...

You want to be qualified as your club’s “designated referee”, but do not want to referee regularly

You need only attend a Foundation Course. You do NOT need to do anything beyond that.

More information about Foundation Courses can be found on the public NSWRU website under "Coaching and Refereeing".

You want to regularly referee juniors, schools, or senior (adult) rugby

You will need to:

  • join a Referee Association, and
  • obtain Level 1 Referee Accreditation. The first step in getting this accreditation is attending a Foundation Course.

More information about the steps you need to take for gaining Accreditation and attending a Foundation Course can be found on the public NSWRU website under "Coaching and Refereeing".
